Age spots, also known as liver spots, are one of the most common skin complaints. As people age, their skin develops dark spots in areas that have been exposed to the sun. People of any age can develop the unappealing blotches, but it is usually after the age of 50 when they begin to appear. Lighter skin tones are most at risk, as are people that have spent a lot of time outside. There are numerous age spot treatments, but very few make any real improvement in the appearance of the skin.
It is almost impossible for people to avoid developing liver spots over the course of their lives, but reducing the number of spots is realistic. Stay out of the sunshine between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm when the rays of the sun are the strongest, and always wear sunblock. This is good advice for anyone but is especially important for those who already have liver spots. The reduction in exposure to the sun will prevent the development of more spots.
Covering the hands and face with vinegar, lemon juice, or buttermilk is messy and does not work. In fact, some of the home remedies could cause additional problems. Lemon juice can cause phytophotodermatitis, a condition that makes the skin sensitive to sunlight and leaves an uncomfortable rash. Lemon juice can also cause hyperpigmentation, a condition where the surrounding skin around a treated area becomes darker.
